SUMMARY:Human Rights Colloquium: Lawyering under Authoritarianism: The
  Iranian Experience
UID:fc32-e64a-fbd5-11362@www.humanrights.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:This FAU CHREN Human Rights Colloquium will be held on 1
2 November 2025 from 6 to 7:30 pm and will feature Dr Afrooz Maghzi as
speaker and Prof. Dr. Eva Pils as chair. Description This presentatio
n examines the evolution of cause lawyering in Iran as a case study of
legal advocacy under authoritarian rule. Iranian lawyers have long de
fended political dissidents\, advanced rights\, and contested repressi
on\, yet their work unfolds within a legal order designed to both enab
le and constrain activism. Drawing on socio-legal debates on authorita
rian legality\, the talk highlights the paradoxical opportunities that
make legal advocacy possible\, while also tracing the state’s strat
egies of suppression—from judicial control and parallel courts to ha
rassment\, disbarment\, and exile. By situating Iran within broader au
thoritarian contexts\, the analysis shows how lawyers navigate between
repression and possibility\, and how their engagement has influenced
social and political movements in contemporary Iran. The Iranian exper
ience also offers insights into the dilemmas and strategies of lawyeri
ng under conditions of rising authoritarianism worldwide. Speaker Bio
Dr Afrooz Maghzi is an Iranian lawyer\, socio-legal scholar\, and huma
n rights activist. She holds a PhD in Law from Martin Luther Universit
y Halle-Wittenberg in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for So
cial Anthropology\, and has been a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law Scho
ol. She previously worked with the FAU Research Centre for Islam and L
aw in Europe (EZIRE) and is currently affiliated with the Irish Centre
for Human Rights in Galway. Her research focuses on lawyering\, gende
