On March 24, 2026, José Aylwin gave a keynote speech on “Challenges of a Just Energy Transition? Lithium Extraction in the Andean Salt Flats of Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia.” at FAU CHREN.

Keynote by José Aylwin

The focus was on the question of what price the rapidly advancing global transition to green technologies entails.
The role of resources such as Lithium is crucial in understanding the social and environmental dimension of an energy transition. The presentation examined the impacts of lithium mining on the regions and populations within the so-called “Lithium Triangle”—Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia—and opened a discussion on what measures would be necessary to establish truly sustainable practices.
