Workshop recap: Succeeding in academic publishing
On February 10, Prof. Dr. Michael Goodhart led a specialized publishing workshop for doctoral students and postdocs at FAU CHREN. Under the motto “Perfect is the enemy of good,” he shared practical strategies for efficiently publishing research results as monographs or academic articles.
The focus was on three central pillars of the publication process:
- Strategic choice of publisher: Goodheart emphasized the need for patience and care in selecting the right publication outlet. Not every publisher is suitable for every project; thorough research in advance is essential.
- The right timing: A critical success factor is the timing of submission. The manuscript should be submitted neither too early nor too late. Since publication processes are lengthy, advanced planning is essential.
- Communication with editors: Practical tips showed how researchers can engage in productive and professional dialogue with the editors of scientific publishers.
The art of arousing curiosity
Special attention was paid to the presentation of Professor Goodheart’s own project. Similar to a blurb, the research question was intended to arouse the interest of publishers. Instead of merely touching on it superficially, it was to be concisely outlined and presented in a pointed manner in order to immediately highlight the relevance of the work.
