Our Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Eline Wærp has recently returned from a three-month Visiting Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum. As part of CAIS’s highly competitive international fellowship programme, she joined a cohort of researchers from diverse disciplines to explore the societal implications of digitalisation.
The fellowship complemented her research at FAU CHREN, which focuses on the digitalisation of EU air border control, and provided valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration. In her own words:
The Center for Internet Studies (CAIS) has a competitive fellowship program which attracts researchers from all over the world. I was lucky to be selected for the summer cohort, and got to spend three months in Bochum this spring. The fellowship was a great opportunity to learn from experts on digitalization, which was very useful since my project at the CHREN is about the digitalization of EU air border control. The research at CAIS is highly interdisciplinary, so it was very interesting to attend the weekly colloquia where people from the different research programs presented their work.Reflecting on her experience, she emphasises the value of working across disciplinary boundaries:
The fellowship has opened my eyes to the many different ways in which the digital impacts our daily lives, and both benefits and risks with that. The biggest takeaway from my time spent at the CAIS is that AI is developing so rapidly that it is important for the public, scholars, and regulators to not fall behind if we want systems that benefit everyone and not just the tech companies.
