About the roundtable
Business and human rights have spent two decades building rules for how companies should prevent and remedy human rights and environmental harm. Gender, for most of that time, has been treated as a special topic: a separate guidance note, a working group, a paragraph near the end. Yet the harms that corporate activity produces are never gender neutral. Women stitch the garments, lose the grazing land, carry the water for longer distances when the mine takes the river, and are sorted and scored by the algorithms that decide who gets hired, paid or watched. This roundtable brings together four leading scholars who work in very different corners of the field, from garment supply chains and labour organising to extractive industries, climate and environmental harm, and the regulation of corporate conduct. Rather than presenting papers, they will answer one shared question:
How do you actually “think gender out loud in your own area of research, and what changes when you do?”
