Dr Gemma Lligadas González has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at CHREN since September. She is also a visiting scholar at the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg (in the field of European and international law). Previously, she was a lecturer in law at the Universitat Ramón Llull in Barcelona and a Global Governance Fellow at the Institut de Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals. Gemma holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and a Master’s degree in International Law from the Universitat Ramón Llull, a joint Master’s degree in Legal Research from the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, the Universidad de Deusto and the Universitat Ramón Llull, and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Oxford.
Gemma is an interdisciplinary scholar specialising in the legal structure of global governance and the global legal order, which is emerging at the intersection of national, transnational and international law. She is particularly interested in researching the transformative dynamics and structural nature of the global legal order, understood as a multi-layered legal system. Gemma’s current research agenda aims to develop a comprehensive theory of the political and legal structure of the global legal order and the global reach of the transformative powers of courts in relation to multi-level political decision-making, as necessitated by global events such as international crises.
